It is needless to say that, new Honda city made a big boom in the Indian car market and providing tough fight to its main rivals. Hyundai Verna is one of its main competitors, though Verna is already a popular name in the market, but when it comes to compare with Honda City, it becomes a little tough for Hyundai’s sedan to take one up Honda City. The major reason behind this is the more popularity and reliability of Honda than Hyundai among Indians.

Price:

Talking about price range, there is no huge difference between the price tags of both the cars but Honda city seems to be slightly pocket friendly. New Fluidic 4S Verna costs at 7.73-12.19 lakhs, While Honda City comes between very competitive and affordable price range of 7.53-11.53 lakhs.

Engine details:

The popularity of Honda City sedan is not hidden from anyone and when company has decided to bring its facelift version with addition of diesel unit too in the market, it is undoubtedly a best car in the segment with efficient engines.

The City diesel variant is sharing the heart of Honda Amaze which is 1.5 liter, i-DTEC Earth Dreams engine. The max output delivered by this diesel engine is 99bhp and 200 Nm mated with 6-speed manual transmission gearbox. And the City petrol version gets same1497cc, 1.5 liter petrol engine like its predecessor which develops 117bhp and 145Nm of peak power and torque, respectively and has 5-speed manual as well as automatic transmission as an option.

On the contrary, ongoing Hyundai Verna diesel which is already performing so well on the road has two-diesel and two-petrol engine options which are fluidic 1.4 L CRDI (diesel), 1.4L VTVT petrol, fluidic 1.6 L CRDI (diesel) and 1.6 L VTVT (petrol) engines.

The 1.4 liter diesel engine churns out the max power of 89bhp and 219Nm while the other 1.6 liter CRDI engine produces 126bhp and 259Nm. And the 1.4L petrol engine offers 105bhp and 138Nm of peak torque while 1.6L CRDi petrol engine develops 121bhp power and 154Nm torque.

These powerful engines of Verna are mated with 5-speed & 6-speed manual transmission (depends upon variants) and also gets 4-speed automatic transmission gearbox as an option. Though, according of Verna’s standard, it should have been at least 5-speed automatic transmission.

As per the mileage is concerned, the ongoing Verna offers an impressive ARAI certified mileage of 24.8-23.9 km/l (diesel) and 17.43 km/l (petrol). However, the mileage figures are just short against Honda City 26 km/l (diesel) and 17.8 km/l (petrol).

Space & Dimension:

Honda City is a longer car than new Verna with better wheelbase. Hence the overall dimensions of this luxury car is 4440mm x 1695mm x 1495mm with the wheelbase of 2600mm, ground clearance of 165mm and boot space of 510 liters.

While the Hyundai Verna carries the dimension of 4370mm x 1700mm x 1475mm along with the wheelbase, ground clearance and boot space of 2570mm, 170mm and 465 liters, respectively.

So, with the slightly ups n downs in dimensions (normally ups in City and downs in Verna), both the sedans offers five seating capacity to its passengers.

Interior & Exterior:

At inside as well as outside the cabin, many new and attractive features have been designed in this new City which includes a blue surrounded instrument cluster, premium variety of engine start/stop button, AC controls and cruise control. Additionally, a classy black dashboard with Bluetooth, USB, Aux-in, iPod connectivity, CD, reversing displays of three various-types, AC vent at rear seats, leather wrapped steering wheel having audio controls on it, four 12V charging points, sunroof, modified bumpers, headlamps, chrome grille at front, renovated tail lamps, shark fin antenna, reverse camera at rear bottom (under the H badge) etc have been embellished in this new classy sedan. Also, the entire remaining features have been carried from its predecessor i.e. 3rd-gen Honda City. Overall, company has tried its best to make this luxury sedan more luxuriant and it is paying off well as City is dominating the segment since its launch and retailing over 6000 units a month.

On the other hand, Hyundai Verna already has made a place in its customer’s hearts with its appealing glimpse and attractive features and new updated Verna will strengthen this image in the country. This trendy sedan is equipped with smart key , engine start/stop button, leather seats, dashboard made with high quality material, new audio system with 10GB storage, , bluetooth support, fully automatic air conditioning, new multifunction and tilt steering wheel with audio control on it, mirrors on sun visors but having no light on either, 15 inches alloy wheels etc. It is being said that this is the only same segment sedan which gives an actual tough fight to the Honda City especially on the basis of its attractive glimpse.

In the new update New Verna now flaunts a two slate chrome front grille; revised bumper with L shaped LED strips on fog lamps, rear side with new combi tail lights, revised bumper with integrated CLA shaped reflectors.

Road handling and Safety:

In terms of safety, both the sedans are equipped with required safety features like ABS, EBD, immobilizer etc but these features availability varies according to the variants. While few safety features are missing in base variants, they make their presence in the top-end trims. Means, you’ll have to spend more money to get more features.

As per the road handling is concerned, the Verna provides a responsive and energetic ride on road but also it starts to lose control on higher speed because of its light steering wheel. While in Honda City, the ongoing petrol variant is offering a very balanced drivability on road and we expect not only the same but even better with this new launch. Also Honda is claiming that new City diesel would be the most fuel efficient car in its segment which is a great report.

Verdict:

Both the cars have their own value and customers in India, Honda is known for its reliability and trustworthiness while the Hyundai offers luxury cars to its customers. With the launch of new city which is available in both diesel n petrol units, the sale of Verna has been affected immensely. Once a segment leader now hardly crosses 1500 units a month but new update will certainly boost up the sales of Verna.

The fourth generation Honda City on the other hand is elegantly designed with tons of goodies and features and provides slight better drivability than Verna. Honda City seems more practical in terms of every department such as design, interiors, features and drivability.

Ongoing Verna was cursed for soft suspension and shaky high speed ride but after new update suspension has been tuned up and steering has also worked upon but you will still find it light on low speeds. Honda City on the other has low refinement level and outright performance base than Verna and benchmark Rapid and Vento.
