Maruti Suzuki Wagon R stingray the latest car from Maruti seems to set the compact car segment on fire. Though the car being a revised model of the Wagon R, the car looks refreshing and has come out with some cool specs. The all new Hyundai i10 Grand launched few hours ago is the latest from Hyundai i10 series which has been one of the best selling cars in India. Both the car makers are trying to capitalize on their previously best sold cars. The launch of both the stylish mid-level compact hatchbacks at a price tag lower than 5-6 L seems to target the middle class Indian car buyers.
The Hyundai Grand i10 is launched with both the diesel and petrol variants while the Stingray is currently available only with the Petrol variant. Both the cars have got decent engine performance and completely justify their price tag. On the papers, the Hyundai i10 Grand looks to be the better engine. It has got an engine displacement of 1197cc while the Stingray comes with a displacement of 998cc. The Hyundai engine powers at a max of 81bhp @ 6000rpm whereas the Stingray has a peak power of 67.7bhp @ 6200 rpm. The Stingray operates at a max torque of 90 Nm @ 3500 rpm while the latest I10 Grand 113.75Nm @ 4000 rpm. The Stingray and the i10 Grand both have got an impressive ground clearance of 165mm. The Stingray claims to have a better mileage of 20.51kmpl than the I10 Grand which has got an ARAI test cycle mileage of 18.9kmpl. Both the cars have got the standard 5-Gear manual transmission engine.
The Exterior of the Hyundai i10 Grand is inspired from its Fluidic philosophy. The Car looks similar to the Current i10 from the side but it is noticeably wider and taller. The Rear of the car looks reminds of the i20 a little, the car’s size falls between the size of the i10 and i20. The standard hexagonal grille design borrowed from the i20 and the well sculpted headlamps gives the car a nice look. The wide moulding at the side which are in contrast black and the roof rails of the car gives the car a unique character. Stingray looks very identical to Wagon R in exterior design with few modifications. The bumpers at the front and the fog lamp housings have bold designs. The alloy-wheels give the car a stylish look.
The Maruti Wagon R stingray has a decent feel to it and the interior design resembles the existing version of Wagon R. It incorporates a stylish dashboard which has the A.C controls and the music system. The interior have got silver layouts at the Steering wheel and the plastic feels decent. The door trims are elegantly designed and have got dual toned look which combines matte black and a gloss rich finish. The Grand i10 has got wide cabin space and a boot space of about 256 litres. The car comes with Beige-Black layout which looks plush and the front dock incorporates the latest 2DIN music system. The car has got enough space between the 1st and the 2nd row seats and proves to be comfortable for long rides. Both the cars have spacious cabin and doesn’t feel cramped even a bit.
The basic variant of both the cars doesn’t feature many of latest safety measures like the anti-locking system and the airbags and that is mainly due to affordable pricing of the cars.
The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Stingray is priced at 4.18L* while I10 Grand is priced at 4.30L *.
Both the car makers have done some aggressive pricing, keeping in mind the economic slowdown. It will be exciting to see which car turns out to be the best seller. Though Maruti Suzuki with their aggressive marketing strategy have always had an edge in the Indian market.
