In 2014 German car maker Volkswagen introduced new Polo is now considering a more powerful and sportier version of Polo in India this year. In India Volkswagen offers Polo in three variants- Polo, Polo GT and Cross Polo with most powerful among all is the GT TDI variant which develops 103.5bhp power and 250Nm torque.
Currently standard Polo is offered in 1.2L MPI petrol engine that produces 74bhp power and 110Nm torque while it’s 1.5L TDI engine develops 89bhp power and 230Nm of peak torque. Both the engines are mated to 5 speed manual transmission.
Volkswagen has bigger plans as they want to increase their market share in hatchback segment so they are planning to bring hotter version of Polo. Volkswagen might bring new Polo with 1.4L TSI engine developing 148bhp power and VW might also bring 1.8L TSI engine which gives 189bhp power. Both the engines are can be found under the hood of Skoda Octavia and 1.8L can sprint 0-100 km in just 6.7 seconds.
This superfast Polo won’t come cheap that for sure even if Volkswagen partly produces it here, it would cost you around 15-17 lakhs. But VW might find hard to sell it huge numbers as it costs around D1 segment sedans and it might attract few enthusiasts only. But there is no doubt that India is a potential market for luxury hatchbacks as Merc A and B class has performed well in India.
Fiat will also launch high powerful version of Punto EVO and Avventura named as Abarth Punto and Abarth Avventura. There are also rumors that Volkswagen might launch Beetle as well in India this year though it is not confirmed yet. If all the above mentioned cars launches in India then surely the future of luxury hatchback looks bright in the country.
