When we think of hybrid cars, first name click to our mind is Toyota Motors as it is first and probably the only Car maker to taste such immense success with this technology. Taking a step ahead, the car maker has showcased first ever Hydrogen powered car called Mirai which means ‘Future’ in Japanese. Though it is showcased as a concept at the 2016 Auto Expo but it is already on sale in the US market for $57,700 (approx 38.49 INR).
It took over long and exerted 23 years and more than 5500 patents to its name during its development stages. Unveiled at LA motor show in 2014, Mirai is the most fuel efficient vehicle rated by environmental protection agency (EPA) as it delivers 27.77 KMPL. It can run 502km on a full tank, one of the largest ranges.
Toyota Mirai’s design is hit or miss kind of affair with sleek profile, sharp edges, sophisticated lean headlamps and strong shoulder line. It also sports huge black air intakes and rides on 17 inch alloy wheels. Coming to the interiors, it is packed with next gen features such as 4.2” HD TFT screen, 11 speakers JBL surround sound system, dual zone automatic climate control, separate 7 inch head up display, touch sensitive navigation, and much more.
For the safety, it packs with ABS, EBD, enhanced vehicle stability control, lane departure alert, pre-collision system, smart stop technology, eight SRS airbags, dynamic radar cruise control etc.
The Mirai is 4890 mm long, 1815 mm wide and 1535 mm tall and has a 2780 mm wheelbase. Due to heavy cells, the kerb weight of the sedan stands at 1850kg. The car breathes through synchronous motor which develops 152bhp of power and 335Nm of peak torque, power is sent to front wheels via an automatic gearbox. Despite of such heavy weight, it can accelerate 0-100km in just 9 seconds and the car even has H2O button.
The Toyota is not considering it for the Indian market as the country lacks the production and supply of Hydrogen, which is restricted to European countries and USA etc.
