Volvo cars India has announced pre-bookings for its luxury sedan S90 in the country ahead of its official launch in September this year. The uber luxury sedan will replace the S80 in the country and will mark the beginning of new chapter for Volvo. The vehicle is based on new Scalable product Architecture (SPA) Platform and utilizes new technologies and company’s futuristic design technology. It is expected to go on sale around Rs. 55 lakh (ex-showroom mark) for the top end variant and will lock its horns against Audi A6, BMW 5 series, Jaguar XF and Mercedes-Benz E-class.
Internationally it gets both diesel and Petrol engines with FWD and AWD options. For India, S90 will be available with sub 2 litre diesel engine in two states of tunes giving it advantage in diesel ban affected cities such as Delhi-NCR and Kerala. The D4 variant develops 190bhp of max power@4200rpm and 400Nm of torque@1750rpm.
The more powerful top of the line D5 variant delivers max output of 235bhp@4000rpm and 480Nm of high torque between 1750 to 2250rpm. Powering at front wheels both the engines are paired to an eight speed automatic gearbox. Apart from diesel engines, petrol and Hybrid powertrain is also on the cards but it will be launched later this year or early 2017.
Based on Volvo’s modular platform, S90 looks larger yet sleeker featuring the new headlights with Thor hammer styled LED DRLs on it, long hood, high shoulder line, and wide front grille lends it masculine looks and left you the larger than life experience. The rear sports company’s conventional C-shaped LED tail lamps but they look for compact now.
Step inside and it’s all about luxury with premium leather, wood, chrome, glass and metal. For features it has automatic climate control, bowers and Wilkins sound system, large touchscreen display with navigation in the central console, multi function steering wheel etc.
Being a Volvo, it’s one of core and biggest selling point is the safety and S90 is loaded with long list like Pilot Assist, park assist, large animal detection, 360 degree camera, multiple airbags and city safety technology.
