The Volkswagen Ameo compact sedan was first launched in June this year but at that time it was introduced with a petrol engine only. Today, Volkswagen Ameo diesel has finally reached the Indian shores available in both manual and automatic transmissions. The version is available in three trims- Trendline, Comfortline and highline and has been priced in between Rs. 6.33 to 9.32 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
The variant draws the juice from the same unit that also powers Vento and Polo but it has been tuned to deliver more power and torque. On Ameo, the 1.5 litre TDI diesel engine delivers 108bhp of max power@4000rpm and 250Nm of torque between 1500-3000rpm. The mill in linked with 5-speed manual gearbox as standard while a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox is also available.
It has an ARAI tested fuel efficiency of 21.73 Kmpl while its petrol sibling delivers 17.83 Kmpl. The Ameo diesel is now the most powerful compact sedan in its segment overtaking Ford Figo Aspire. Ameo lock its horns against the likes of Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent and Tata zest.
The Petrol powered variant is powered by a 1.2 litre MPi petrol engine that belts out 74bhp of power and 110Nm of torque, paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox. In terms of design and equipment list, diesel is similar to its petrol counterparts except for the TDi badging at rear.
Volkswagen Ameo comes with many segment first features like static cornering lights, front center arm rest, anti-pinch windows, cruise control and rain sensing wipers. Other features include a 5 inch touchscreen with Mirror link app, automatic climate control, electrically adjustable ORVMs, rear defogger, reverse parking camera, height adjustable driver’s seat and much more.
Just like its petrol sibling, diesel also comes with dual front airbags and anti-lock braking system (ABS) as standard across the range. The top variants get ESP (electronic stabilization program), speed sensing auto door lock, Hill hold control, reverse parking camera, engine immobilizer with floating code etc. The diesel variant is expected to garner better sales volume as its more powerful and fragile compared to petrol mill.
