The British Luxury car giant Land Rover has launched the petrol version of its popular SUV ‘Discovery Sport’ in India. The baby land rover is priced at Rs. 56.50 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) and available only on HSE trim. The petrol powered variant will join the diesel TD 4 and SD 4 which are already on sale in India in the price bracket of Rs. 46.10 and Rs. 62.18 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The petrol variant will be sold alongside diesel siblings at all 23 dealerships across the country.
The petrol Discovery Sport houses the same 1999cc engine that does duty on Jaguar XE sedan. It belts out max power of 237bhp@5500rpm and high torque of 340Nm between 2000-4000rpm, linked to an advanced 9-speed automatic transmission. The SUV can clock 100km/hr speed from idle in 8.2 seconds which is 2.1 seconds faster than its diesel sibling.
This move comes as a result of ban on the new registrations of 2000cc or more diesel vehicles in Delhi NCR region, Kerala and in future this ban could be widened on more cities. As the future of diesel seems to be uncertain that makes petrol as the only hope for the carmakers. Mahindra has already launched its SUVs with downsized diesel engine and will soon update its line up with petrol engines; BMW also launched 3 and 5 series in petrol last month.
Like its diesel sibling, this variant also has all the bells and whistles such as Stylish Xenon headlamps with LED DRLs, LED tail lamps, panoramic sunroof etc. For comfort and luxurious experience it gets premium grained leather upholstery, touchscreen infotainment system with navigation and reverse parking display, USB charging points, ambient lighting, central console with sliding arm rest, 11 speaker surround system, park assist, Roll stability control, electronic traction control, hill descent control and company’s renowned Terrain response system.
The Discovery Sport has 5+2 seating option and measures 4599mm in length, 2173mm in width, 1724mm in height and wheelbase of 2741mm. It comes with wading depth of 600mm and rides on a ground clearance of 212mm.
Commenting on the launch of the petrol discovery sport, Mr. Rohit Suri, President, Jaguar Land Rover India, said, “We are excited to introduce the petrol derivative of the Land Rover Discovery Sport. This will help us broaden the appeal of this fabulous premium versatile SUV for customers who are more inclined towards driving a vehicle with a powerful petrol engine at its heart along with Land Rover’s legendary off-road capability and reliability – a perfect combination of performance, capability and composure.”
