If you believe that the existing engine options in Elite i20 is not good enough to excite you then get ready to wooed as Hyundai is planning to launch i20 with a powerful engine. Hyundai is testing Elite i20 with a new 1.0l turbocharged engine which is claimed to deliver more power and better fuel efficiency. The new i20 is expected to make its debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September this year before going for sale internationally in the following year.

At last year’s Paris auto show, Hyundai showcased the new engine for the first time along with the other 1.4l unit. The three cylinder 1.0 unit 998cc engine is based on Kappa MPI engine which is good enough to churn out 118bhp of max power and 172Nm of torque. The engine also features single turbocharger and direct injection technologies.

In India Hyundai Elite i20 boasts a 1.2L VTVT Kappa engine that develops 82bhp power and 115Nm of torque. On the contrary, Hyundai current 1.0l engine which is equipped with EON produces max power of 68bhp and 94Nm torque. However, we Indians might not get to drive the Elite i20 with a new engine anytime soon.

New Elite i20 might also get some cosmetic changes like tweaked LED tail lights, revised front bumper etc. Moreover, Hyundai will soon launch Elite i20, Verna and i20 active with a seven inch touchscreen screen infotainment system with in-built navigation, reverse parking assistance and it will be hooked to an 8 speaker audio system.

This move could be the result of some serious competition around in the form of Honda Jazz, Volkswagen Polo and upcoming Maruti YRA hatchback. The new engine will help i20 to widen its appeal and will help to give cut throat competition to Polo GT and upcoming YRA hatchback which is also getting a turbocharged unit.

Hyundai is also considering hotter performance version of i20 under N badge but it is not coming before 2017.
