Mahindra and Mahindra recalls its flagship SUV XUV500 for side airbag software update

Mahindra XUV500 facelift

The home-grown auto major, Mahindra & Mahindra has issued an official press release and recalls XUV500 models manufactured before July 2014 in India. The reason behind issuing a recall of 55,000-60,000 units of XUV500 is to update its side curtain airbag software only and no parts will be replaced.

Affected customers will be contacted by the company itself or customers can visit ‘Service Action’ section at the official website of M&M and can check whether their vehicle is a part of recall or not. The software would be carried out free of cost for affected customers.

This is not the first time that Mahindra’s XUV500 is being recalled, in November 2014 M&M recalled around 2300 units of XUV500 and Scorpio to rectify defective vacuum pump in the engines manufactured in May 2014. In March 2013 24,695 units XUV500 were recalled to check oil seepage from the hose which affected steering wheel and overall performance.

Mahindra launched XUV500 in September 2011 and since then M&M has sold over 1 lakh units and still it manages to grab decent amount of sales mark. Mahindra and Mahindra will launch XUV500 facelift with some subtle changes and most prominent will be a Sunroof and an AMT gearbox.

Mahindra & Mahindra said the programme is aimed at “up gradation of the side-curtain airbag software” “The proactive inspection/up gradation is in keeping with Mahindra’s customer-centric approach.”

M&M recall of XUV500 is also keeping with SIAM’s (Society of Indian automobile manufactures) voluntary code on vehicle recall and since July 2012 over 7 lakh vehicle have been recalled by well renowned and various manufactures in India.

In January Renault recalled 646 units of Diesel Scala and Pulse hatchback in India over problem with airbags and GM recalled Chevrolet Cruze over a fault drive shaft. In December 2014 Auto makers like Ford and Maruti Suzuki recalled Eco Sport and Ciaz sedan.

In November 2014 Toyota recalled 5834 units of Corolla Altis diesel variants to correct problem related to power train and Ford India recalled 3072 units of Fiesta to fix glow plug control module. German luxury car maker Audi became the part of recalling spree when they recalled over 6700 units of A4 sedans to update its airbag control units.
