After BMW, Mercedes now joins the make in India campaign of Prime Minister Narendra Modi by rolling out the GLA class SUV from its Chakan facility, Pune. Mercedes-Benz India has also inaugurated its extended assembly plant at their existing facility with an investment of Rs. 1000 crore. The compact premium SUV in the first car based on MFA platform from Mercedes-Benz to be locally produced in the country.
The plant was inaugurated by Honorable Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis, Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister for CC and EF, Subash desai, industry Minister, Maharashtra and Eberhard Kern, MD and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India.
The annual capacity of plant now stands at 20,000 units up from 10,000 units earlier and it is the highest for any luxury car maker in India. Mercedes has been assembling some of its cars like S class, E class, C class sedan, GL class and ML in Chakan plant, Pune. In coming days Mercedes might also start producing other cars like A Class, B class and CLA.
Eberhard Kern, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India, said, “Rolling out our first ever locally manufactured GLA and commencing production from India’s largest installed luxury car production facility are two very significant accomplishments for Mercedes-Benz in India. The GLA has been a sensation in the compact luxury SUV market and witnessed an increasing demand from across the markets. The GLA would be the first of the New Generation Cars to be rolling out of our plant. Mercedes-Benz India is on the right growth path and we are confident that we are creating a better future for the brand in India.”
Mercedes-Benz GLA class continues to be power with 2.1L diesel engine that delivers 136bhp power and 300Nm of peak torque comes paired with a seven speed dual clutch transmission and returns best in segment fuel efficiency of 17.9 KMPL. It takes 9.9 seconds for 2.1L diesel engine to perform 100km mark with the top speed of 205 km/hr.
