Earlier this year, we had reported that Fiat will launch T-Jet versions of Punto Evo and Avventura in 2015. Now, the test mule of Punto Evo has been spotted hiding a T-jet engine under the hood. The hatchback is currently available with 1.2L or 1.4L petrol and 1.3L diesel engines so with more power this Italian beast will be fast.
Fiat will launch Punto EVO with 1.4L T-jet turbocharged engine produces 134bhp power and paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox. However the same 1.4L engine does duty in Linea also but produces 113bhp power around 20bhp less than the EVO T-jet. Other than the engine Evo T-jet to feature with disc brakes on all wheels and 16 inch alloy wheels with telephone dial pattern.
With the new engine, Punto Evo T-jet is expected to take on Volkswagen Polo GT TSI which delivers 105bhp power from 1.2L direct injection motor mated to a 7 speed DSG gearbox. Polo GT TSI is relatively down on power and enthusiasts are shift slick freaks so EVO with manual gearbox hits the right button. Expect a 0-100 km sprint in 9 seconds with the top speed of 200km/hr.
The Punto Evo has always been a driver’s car and with some additional punch of T-jet motor should do well to enhance the handling capabilities of the car and will become a favorite among enthusiasts.
In spite of having excellent ride and handling package Punto Evo is one of the most under rated hatchbacks in the country and still doesn’t sell in good numbers. However the power weight ratio of Punto EVO is not very exciting which hampers its performance.
The Italian carmaker is still testing the car and has done 83,000 kms on it and will undergo two more phases of testing. The Punto EVO T-jet is likely to be launched by the festive season and will be the most powerful hatch in the country under 10 lakh when launched. This powerful variant targets the enthusiast so Fiat will use ‘Abarth’ nameplate for this car.
Fiat also has plans to launch the Avventura Abarth version with same 1.4L T-jet engine in the country however no specific date has been announced.
