India’s largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki has received over 4000 units of SUV Gypsy by Indian army; this is probably the biggest order that Maruti Suzuki has received of Gypsy from the Army. The company however didn’t unveil the financial details of the order as the contract is finalized by the central government. Ex showroom price of Gypsy is between 5.42-5.96 lakh so approx the total order would be between 224- 246 crore.
Maruti has been supplying Gypsy to Indian Army over the last 30 years; Maruti Suzuki has manufactured around 1.4 lakh units of Gypsy till now and 22 percent of total produced Gypsy was served to armed forces. Out of 4141 units around 2100 units has already dispatched to Indian army and rest of it will be dispatched in coming four to five months.
Maruti Suzuki supplies around 12 vehicles per annum across the globe with turnover of over 45000 crores.
MSI Said, “Keeping in view such a large scale of operations of the company, this particular order is around 0.34 per cent of the total number of vehicles sold by the company in a year.”
R S Kalsi, Executive Director Marketing and sales in a statement said, “The armed and paramilitary forces are a major customer for Maruti Suzuki. The army is amongst the major buyers of our vehicles since 1991. Starting with around 1500 Gypsy in the first year, we have sold about 31,000 of these to them. The latest order is the single largest we have had for the Gypsy from the army”.
He further added, “Gypsy has been specially designed to meet the requirement for the Indian army. “These vehicles can operate in tough terrain, difficult geographies like in Ladakh. There are elaborate standards and quality inspection processed, which are carried out continuously. Given the good performance and the adequate availability of spares our cars, army prefers these”.
