Maruti Suzuki India’s largest car manufacturer is looking to take its AMT range further up by introducing one more car with AMT gearbox. According to media reports, Maruti is readying a Wagon R with an AMT. Wagon R has been a chart buster car for Maruti in terms of sales which is still gathering more than hefty amount of booking numbers despite of being launched quite a while ago.

Maruti is planning to equipped Wagon R stingray which made its debut in 2013 and placed over the top variant of Wagon R. Stingray has not tasted much success as expected or like its elder sibling Wagon R though it will get an AMT gearbox it might be the strategy of Maruti to boost the poor sales of Maruti Stingray.

Wagon R Stingray will be the third car of Maruti after Celerio and recently launched K10 to AMT which also made it a cheapest priced AMT car in the world overtaking Celerio. AMT does not cost much as compared to automatic transmission but it will be more expensive than its manual sibling approximately by Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 35,000.

AMT makes clutch pressing lesser as compared to in manual transmission which makes driving in heavy traffic relentlessly easy and stress free and most importantly it improves the mileage of a car in comparison to Manual transmission which is stands at 20.51 KPL. Maruti uses AMT gearboxes from Magnetti Marelli which is currently supply 3500 units in a month but Maruti has asked it to increase it to 5000 units. It is also reported that Magnetti Marelli is planning to set up its plant in Gurgaon, Haryana adjacent to Maruti’s plant in order to cope up with the increasing demand of AMT.

Mechanically Wagon R stingray is going to be same with 1.0L K10 engine which produces 67.1BHP power@6200rpm and 90Nm torque@3500rpm mated to 5 speed manual transmission but it will get an automated transmission like Celerio and recently launched Alto K10.

In the recent times automotive industry has witnessed the inclusion of AMT cars on frequent basis, starting with Celerio than Tata zest which is currently the least priced AMT sedan under 8 lakh segment, Maruti Ciaz which will get AMT soon, upcoming Nano Twist AMT and Alto K10 and now Wagon R stingray which will launch in next year and it is also being predicted that 30% of passenger vehicles will be equipped with an AMT by 2020.
