A colleague of mine was just planning to buy a new hatchback car for her daily use and thus she wants to do some research so that an appropriate car on the grounds of price, power, style and performance can be chosen. Well, on the way of our research, we came to know that there is a bulk of hatchback models in India and it’s really just very complicated to choose one among them. And situation become worse when there are more than one small car in Indian car market offering by the same brand and this brand is none other than Maruti Suzuki which has just become the second meaning of hatchback models now.

However, her research took final pause on two Maruti’s model; one is Refreshed Swift while another is Celerio. So I tried to differentiate these two classy hatchbacks with each other. Let’s have a look.

Price:

When anyone plans to buy a daily-used car then its price range mostly comes to the top list of the research list. Everyone wants to buy a small car with an affordable price. Well, Maruti always tries to provide its cars in least budget but still there is a difference between companies’s these two hatchbacks.

While Refreshed Swift (petrol) carries the price tag of 4.42 lakhs (base variant) and 5.90 lakhs (top-end), the all-new Celerio can be availed at the cost of 3.7 lakhs for its base variant and 4.7 lakhs for its top-end. Hence, Maruti’s old hatchback Celerio definitely beats the refreshed one on the basis of its price.

Contrary, the Refreshed Swift diesel has price range between 5.56-6.95 lakhs (as per the variants).

Engine details:

Though, Swift is costlier than Celerio but also it offers option of both diesel and petrol fuel availability while the new hatchback just has petrol unit. Also, Swift has more powerful engine and also tendency to develop more power than the other one.

The refreshed Swift is powered by 1197cc, 1.2 liter K-series petrol engine which power has been reduced to get more fuel efficiency the max power of refreshed swift now stands at 83.1bhp and peak torque of 115Nm while the Celerio gets 1.0 liter K-series petrol engine churning out the max power and torque of 67.07bhp and 90Nm which is clearly not as better as the company’s older car.

Also, as mentioned above, Swift is equipped with a diesel engine which is 1248cc, 4-cylinder DDiS engine and responsible to produced 74bhp and 190Nm of max output and torque respectively.

As per its transmission is concerned, Celerio undoubtedly goes a step over the Swift by offering 5-speed manual as well as automatic both transmission gearbox while the old Swift is only mated with a 5-speed manual transmission. Also, with this equipped automatic transmission in Celerio, company has used an improved technology with it by making it an AMT (automated manual transmission) to assist the car in improved drivability.

As per their fuel economy is concerned, Celerio offers better mileage figures of 23.4 km/l over the 20.4 km/l mileage of refreshed Swift improved yet falling short petrol trim mileage. However, the Swift diesel offers 25.2 km/l of fuel efficiency which gets improved by 10% now.

All mileage figures mentioned above are ARAI Certified.

Performance:

Handling wise, Swift is a decent car which performs well not only in highway but even in city roads. Its powerful engine equipment makes it one of the best driven cars for the daily basis and its users enjoy its driving. Contrary, Celerio is new but still people who have taken its ride are looking well appealed and satisfied by this trendy hatchback, the reason may be use of advanced technology including the new clutch-less transmission gearbox about which company is claiming that it has been introduced very first in industry.

Space & Dimension:

Being a hatchback model, both the cars offer seating capacity for five passengers but refreshed Swift is longer and wider than Celerio. The refreshed Swift dimensions has remained same which are 3850mm long, 1695mm wide and 1530mm tall while Celerio is 3600mm in length, 1600mm in width and 1560mm in height.

Wheelbase and ground clearance of refreshed Swift are 2430mm and 170mm which are slightly longer and better than Celerio’s 2425mm of wheelbase and 165mm of ground clearance.

Exterior, Interior & Safety:

Exterior of Refreshed Swift gets minor retouch in the form of new front grille, redesigned front bumper, not so powerful bezel fog lamps, multi spoke alloy wheels. Refreshed Swift is now available in three new colors which are Mysterious Violet, Fire red and Granite gray. Rear side of refreshed Swift is similar to ongoing model with just one change i.e. rear parking sensors.

Celerio being same brand model share almost similar feature equipments at inside as well as outside identical but it is more compact than Swift which is muscular than Celerio. Celerio is equipped with features like twin chrome grill embedded with Maruti’s logo, front silver accent fog lamps, side character lines, body colored door handles and ORVM’s with turn indicators. Dual tone cabin of Celerio looks more beautiful at first glance than Swift despite of getting refreshed. The cabin of Celerio carries features like updated music system with bluetooth, AUX, USB assistance whereas top variant of Celerio is equipped with more classy features like integrated music system, multi utility instrumental function comprises of speedometer, rpm meter and information counter and steering mounted controls.

Safety wise, Maruti has brought some much needed changes in the safety department of refreshed Swift with features like reverse parking sensors, new GEN Anti lock braking system, electronic brake distribution, dual airbags and three point seat belts. Other features like brake assistant, dual horn, anti theft device, icats, child lock and side protection impact beams.

Celerio on the hand falls short in numbers when it comes to safety features which are front airbags, ABS, rear window washer and wiper, immobilizer, child safety rear door lock, rear window defoggers etc.

Maruti has tried to give its best in Celerio but still there is a one major drawback in Celerio hatchback that the essential safety devices like ABS and airbags are only available as optional features which can be only availed by spending extra money.
