Tata motors have outshined its arch rival Mahindra and Maruti Suzuki as it has seized a deal of 3192 units with the Indian Army. The Safari Storme will replace the iconic Maruti’s Iconic Gypsy in the 4*4 light vehicle category. Gypsy has been integral part of Army since 1991 with Maruti having offered more than 30,000 units. Mahindra’s Scorpio was also a stronger challenger but the Army went for Safari Storme. This order might grow tenfold in the coming years.

Tata has signed the deal with Indian Armed forces under the new GS8000 category underpinned by India Ministry of Defence (MOD) flotation of RFP (Request for Proposals) for vehicles with three essential criterionhard roofs, minimum load capacity of 800 kgs and air conditioning. Despite ticking all three boxes right, Safari Storme was tested in extreme conditions for 15 months to check whether it’s capable to cope up with on and off road conditions.

Launched in 2012, Safari storme has been delivering great on and off road capabilities, great driving experience. Under the hood is a 2.2l 4-cylinder Varicor 400 diesel engine that makes 156PS power and 400Nm of torque. It rides on 200mm of ground clearance. The SUV 4*4 variant also comes with electronic shift-on-fly (ESOF) technology.

Commenting on the event, Vernon Noronha, Vice President, Defence & Government Business, Tata Motors, said, “We are very proud to have received this prestigious order for over 3000 units of the Safari Storme under the newly formed GS800 category. Tata Motors has been a leading supplier of mobility solutions to the Indian Armed Forces and this order is a testimony to our partnership with the country’s security forces. This variant of the Storme has been modified from the one available for civilians with an upgraded drivetrain and significantly modified suspension. The Safari Storme was conceived and designed keeping in mind the need for a rugged, comfortable and reliable vehicle, making it popular with law enforcement agencies. We will shortly commence delivery of these vehicles for the Army and Navy in a phased manner.”
