Auto Expo 2016: Tata’s new compact SUV Nexon makes debut

Tata Nexon View

Tata Motors had the biggest pavilion at the biennial Indian auto expo fulfilled with range of showstoppers such as Zica, Hexa and Nexon SUV. The domestic car major showcased the Nexon SUV in production ready version which unmistakably looks the Xerox of the concept showcased at 2014 edition of auto expo. Codenamed as X104, the car is based on same XO platform as Zica, Bolt and it will compete with Maruti Suzuki Vitara, Mahindra TUV300 and Ford EcoSport.

In terms of design, it might feel that silhouette is taken from Zica or Indica but the design is all new and never seen before. The two tone color theme and curvy roofline is certainly making things modern and refreshing. The front honeycomb grille is large and gets signature humanity line flanked by projector headlamps with LED DRLs and turn blinkers.

The big alloy wheels, sloping line with roof rails and white color underlining below the window makes it unique while rear is also something quirky with things like high mounted tail lamps, dual shade boot lid and sporty bumper.

Things inside the cabin have some Déjà Vu sense inspired by Zica and Kite 5 sedan. It gets a new dual color dashboard, standing head up display with connectNext system, navigation, voice recognition and eight speakers, control knob for the driving modes (Standard, Eco and Sport), climate control system, multi function steering wheel, great quality plastic and premium upholstery.

As said, Nexon is a sub 4 metre SUV with five seating configuration and measurements be like 3990mm length, 1730mm width and 1600mm. The car has a wheelbase of 2470mm and offers 200mm of ground clearance which is more than sufficient for most of the bad roads. The new compact SUV is expected to be priced in the bracket of Rs. 6.5-10 lakhs (ex-showroom) and might be launched during the festive season this year.

The compact SUV to come with both petrol and engines, a new 1.5L diesel engine producing close to 108bhp power and 260Nm of peak torque. The petrol department will be handled by a 1.2l Revotron turbocharged unit that makes 89bhp power and 140Nm torque. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual as standard across both the engines while diesel may come with F- tronic AMT as well.
